Blackest Night expands across the DC Line!!!

Postby comicsareliterature » Wed Aug 19, 2009 12:25 am

Well, for all of those people who kept claiming that Blackest Night was more contained and not a mega event crossover like others, you might want to check out the November 2009 solicitations.

ADVENTURE COMICS #4
BOOSTER GOLD #26
DOOM PATROL #4
JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA #39
SUPERMAN/BATMAN #66
R.E.B.E.L.S. #10
TEEN TITANS #77
THE OUTSIDERS #24

These are all additional tie-ins above and beyond the GL books and all of the BN minis. Don't look now, but it seems that the little event that was is expanding in scope.

Were there any minis for solicited for November? I'm looking forward to Flash and Wonder Woman. As for tie ins with regular series, maybe it's only for November while the minis take a break?

Still and all, I'm not picking up any of these regular series tie ins, except for those titles I'm already getting; in this case Adventure Comics and JLA.
My List for 5th November:
Buffy The Vampire Slayer #30, Wonder Woman: Rise of the Olympian HC, Amazing Spider-Man #610, Assault on New Olympus, Nova #31, Ultimate Spider-Man #4

If they stick with the format they did in the front, the minis will likely start in month five. Geoff already teased/announced BN Flash, and based on the action figure, Wonder Woman is a fair guess.

BN Flash is by Johns & Kolins and BN WW is by Rucka and an unannounced artist. BN JSA is the last title, but I don't think that the creative team has been announced yet. These three will probably start in December and finish at the same time as the main mini; just realised that now.

An event of this magnitude would naturally cross into other titles, it does affect the whole universe. There is absolutely no indication that you have to read any of the other titles to enjoy, or understand, the main series, it seems to stand on its own. DC would be foolish not to try to increase readership on other titles by not having them involved in the evert.

To expand on the post above, there are also books where it makes sense that they would get involved. For example, Booster Gold has been hinting at the Blackest Night since day one with their chalk board, and Geoff was the original writer...it makes complete sense it would get a Blackest Night chapter or two.

I think people would complain if there wasn't a booster/ted issue and that will be a two parter. These are all optional tie ins and actually I would have preferred a line wide Blackest Night month for characters that don't have minis. As they said, everyone has someone and its not like these will be essential for plot its just good personal story.

I think breaking the tie-ins into two sets is a very neat idea. It seems the eight-issue mini breaks naturally into two parts, prelude to Nekron and Nekron's active participation in the story. So having separate stories connected to either half allows more stories to be told. And it keeps the cost down - you're only picking up three tie-in series at a time, they tell their stories quickly and you move on.

It's too bad that Flash rebirth has been delayed as it has - I get the impression that it was supposed to have finished before BN started. unless it ties up soon there's a danger of BN Flash coming out the same time as the last issue (or two) of Rebirth.

It'll be interesting to see if they can get the whole event out on time. Lo3W and Flash rebirth have had delays; one wonders if they've been able to keep that under control with BN.

What happened with Flash: Rebirth is a shame, on all parts involved, but hopefully it gets corrected before the damage is unrecoverable. And about the November solicitations, I see it as the natural thing to do with an event of this magnitude: It has to necessarily expand to the rest of the universe. Most people complained that Final Crisis, regardless of the story itself, didn't showed any effect outside the main series and the satellite minis. Only recently, in JSA and now in Titans, the antilife equation has been addressed. Still, most of this crossovers are self contained and don't have any meddling with the main story.

I'm hoping the Anti-Life equation doesn't become the new go-to mcguffin in the DCU. It was used in Oracle:The Cure, it's touched on in Titans, but I'm hoping it goes away.

Ha... You're right. Oracle: the Cure. I guess I've just erased it from my memory. But hopefully Antilife goes away, just as you say... I remember it used to be one of the coolest concept of the fourth world, along with the Mathmagicians. Now is like a crazy aunt nobody wants to come closer...

Yes, I hope so too. It's Morrison syndrome, sadly. When Grant Morrison introduces something (yes, the ALE has been around forever, but Morrison was the one who popularised "a world governed by the ALE" in FC and Rock of Ages), less talented writers take his ideas and sadly do absolutely nothing with them except beat it to a slow, ugly, cliched death.

I actually like the expansion of titles in the crossover so long as they make sense narratively. I mean, I don't want to see a Blackest Night crossover in Tiny Titans or anything like that, but if we can see some cool zombie stuff in Booster Gold I'm game for that.

My issue with crossovers is when issues outside the event mini become a major piece of the overall story, and where you can't really understand the event unless you read the tie-ins. For example, take the case of Superman Beyond with Final Crisis and the glut of crossovers with Secret Invasion and Dark Reign. Sure, some of the stories may be relevant to the larger event, but do all of them really need to be told? To me, the answer is no. Blackest Night hasn't gone that far yet, plus it helps that the story is awesome.

TO be I don't mind the darkest night crossing in to other book at least it still managable and the Doom Patrol story sounds chilling .

saddly There is one book I wish it could have crossed over in to vigilantie . it would have been fun to see Adrian Chase come back and the hole in his head would have been a great visual sadly this month is the last issue of that series who know maybe we will still see Adrian

good day

Some of these sounds interesting. Booster Gold for sure... and hey, some of these books can use the bump.
you can always not buy them...

According to this post: http://www.thegreenlanterncorps.com/forum/showpost.php?p=222674&postcount=1 DC will be offering the remaining Lantern rings with each of November's Blackest Night tie-in issues. I don't know if it's true or not, but I will now pick up every tie-in book I can in order to get the remaining rings.

Edit: Oops, beat me to it. http://newsarama.com/common/forums/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=9057

Judging form Johns' track record, BN will have delays. I'm just going to expect them now because it seems like more often then not, a Johns penned mini/event/ongoing will have delays.

wait, didn't DiDio promise that there would only be about 6 or 7 mini series for Blackest Night and it won't be a whole big crossover event that goes into every book? or am I imagining things..

The thing I like is that none of these titles/tie-ins come across as them being a vital part of Blackest Night but more a case of "this is what Booster Gold is doing during Blackest Night" type of tie-in. As for me I already get all of them except for Outsiders and Superman/Batman which I still won't get. The other bonus, if you will, is that each one will be 40 pages which brings them all to $3.99 that a majority of these books already charges.
